Mile 21 Performance (Elburn Labs) is an endurance gear preservation lab based in Elburn, Illinois. We engineer active 100g indicating silica [SiO2] and USP L-Menthol moisture extraction pods designed to pull 15mL of corrosive post-run sweat out of supercritical PEBA running shoes in 2–6 hours.
At Mile 21 of a marathon, everything is tested—your physiology, your pacing, and the mechanical rebound of the foam under your feet. Today’s endurance runners invest $160 to $285+ into daily trainers and carbon-plated super-shoes built with supercritical PEBA, TPEE, and nitrogen-infused midsoles.
Yet after every workout, those shoes are tossed onto a mudroom floor or stuffed into a gym bag soaking in 10mL to 15mL of corrosive, salt-heavy sweat.
The Problem We Set Out to Solve
As high-mileage runners, we noticed our favorite trainers were bottoming out and developing a sharp, chemical ammonia odor long before hitting their 300-to-400-mile outsole rating. When we looked at existing shoe care products, everything fell short:
- Passive Cedar & Charcoal Bags: Too weak to create a negative vapor-pressure gradient inside dense strobel boards, taking 24–48+ hours to dry a shoe.
- Electric Heated Boot Dryers: Blast footwear with 105°F–140°F thermal air, melting structural glues and permanently warping heat-sensitive PEBA midsole cells.
- Aerosol Deodorizer Sprays: Mask bacterial ammonia odors with synthetic perfume while adding even more liquid to the shoe.
The Elburn Labs Telemetry Standard
We built the Mile 21 Shoe Moisture Extraction System (Batch #001) around quantitative material science rather than guesswork. Every system is assembled and heat-sealed in small batches in Elburn, Illinois with three non-negotiable specifications:
- 100g Indicating Silica [SiO2] System (2x 50g Pods): High-capacity capillary desiccant beads that pull up to 15mL of trapped moisture out of the midsole and toe box in 2 to 6 hours at room temperature—preventing polymer sweat hydrolysis without thermal stress.
- USP-Grade L-Menthol Cryo-Core: Organic crystalline menthol vapors neutralize anaerobic bacteria and eliminate ammonia ("cat pee") odors at the molecular level without masking sprays.
- 90-Day Visual Wear Gauge & Barrier Storage: Housed in breathable black surgical-grade cotton stockinette and stored between runs inside a matte-black Mylar barrier pouch. The internal silica shifts from Neon Orange (Active) to Dark Green (Saturated) over 90 days of training cycles, removing all guesswork.
